Advanced Imaging Technologies for More Accurate Diagnoses
In the field of diagnostics, Fraunhofer IMTE develops state-of-the-art imaging techniques such as Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) and CT technologies that offer exceptional image quality and sensitivity. These innovative methods enable more accurate, faster, and gentler diagnoses – a significant advancement for medical care. Our goal is to continuously develop these technologies and actively promote their clinical application.
AI-supported Solutions for Improved Prostate Cancer Diagnosis
Especially older patients often suffer from multimorbidity, so conditions like prostate cancer frequently occur alongside orthopedic ailments – for example, in patients with hip implants. Radiation planning for prostate cancer is typically based on CT scans. However, metallic implants cause image artifacts due to beam hardening effects, which complicate accurate diagnosis. At Fraunhofer IMTE, AI-based algorithms have been developed to reduce metal artifacts, significantly minimizing image errors. This technology greatly improves the accuracy of radiation therapy planning, contributing to better healing chances.
Magnetic Imaging and Nanomedicine: New Paths in Diagnostics
A special field of innovation is Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI), a radiation-free, highly sensitive imaging technique. Fraunhofer IMTE covers the entire process chain of this technology – from the simulation and development of complex magnetic fields to the production of contrast agents (tracers) and the development of hardware and software. Through specialized expertise in coil design, filter chain construction, and reconstruction algorithms, precise and forward-looking imaging solutions are created.
Future Prospects: Innovations for Clinical Practice
Future research will focus on the further development of MPI technology as well as the integration of additional imaging techniques. The goal is to demonstrate the clinical applicability of these innovative diagnostic techniques and realize initial translational applications. To this end, Fraunhofer IMTE is expanding its strategic partnerships with clinical and industrial partners to continuously improve diagnostics and set new standards for precise medical imaging.
